As for the actual car control, track design, and overall "race" feel though, Dirt 2 is definitely on the right track.Ĭlick+above+for+footage+of+the+350Z+and+more. The game's AI is very passive, the level detail could certainly be upped (specifically buildings and environment detail), and the audio still isn't there, with no in-game music during races and some static braking sounds that will hopefully be tuned out. As far as the overall presentation goes Dirt 2 is still in a pre-release stage, but there are certainly things that are working and could be changed alike.

In general the game is still a bit more arcade-like and floaty than the other versions, but it also retains its sense of speed especially when in the "inside the car" bumper camera mode. Once turning that off, however, the controls opened up significantly, allowing drifts to easily kick in and enable a far more "Dirt-like" experience overall. The game also has a drive aid option that is automatically turned on, so when first jumping in it felt as if it was nearly impossible to pull the handbreak and initiate a drift. The Subaru WRX is a pretty versatile hatchback, but the Evo X is hands-down more at home on the asphalt, bouncing all over the place when going over dirt bumps. Each car handles differently, the varied types (buggy, rally, truck) all feel very different and take jumps with varying success, and even more miniscule differences between like cars can be felt instantly. In general the overall gameplay control is pretty responsive when using the nunchuk/Wii-mote setup, though Wii-mote only tilting is certainly not refined as of yet and very sluggish. As with the other versions of Dirt 2 you've got your choice between classic rally cars, including street racers like the 350Z or Lancer Evo X, bigger off-road vehicles like buggies and the Hummer H3, and of course some classic dust-kickers in the form of the Subaru WRX STI hatchback and the like.Ĭheck+out+Dirt+2+in+action+on+Wii. Bringing in the same overall world tour concept as the HD versions and wrapping it in the same "race day motorhome" setup (you control the game's interface from inside your 'meals on wheels' RV) Dirt 2 is a less impressive visual package, but also a game that has the feel of its bigger brothers retained. We've had a chance to play both, and there's certainly reason for Nintendo owners to take a look.ĭirt 2 for Wii is the first time the franchise (Dirt and GRID, for that matter) have made a showing on Nintendo's console.

With Dirt 2, the team from Dirt and GRID is back again to deliver a hybrid of the two, and while the focus this year is of course on the uber-budget HD version that'll be hitting 360 and PS3 this September there's also both a DS and Wii version on the way. It was a big change, but it was met with a great response.

More recently, GRID hit the scene, trading out the dust and hatchback-emphasis of rally and focusing on the enclosed, precision-demanding tarmac. With Dirt, the company redefined rally racing, bringing about some impressive visuals and loose (but also dependable) controls all wrapped up in a beautiful competitive package. Codemasters has been blowing away the competition for years now with its racing duo of Dirt and GRID.
